The experience of a relaxing classic train journey is an original way to spend a truly different day surrounded by the lovely scenery offered by the Sienese countryside, rediscovering a route that is lost in the mists of time. Up to October you can set off from around Siena on old-style trains. The only problem is that you’re spoilt for choice since there are so many routes! As well as enjoying the incomparable nature from the compartment windows, you can explore some unique stations to visit villages, castles or simply follow a nature trail. It’s an idea for all nature lovers, especially in these lovely months for walking and hiking and for the curious amongst you to observe the landscapes in their hidden corners, which would otherwise be hard to reach. There are many days and themed routes to choose from, including steam trains or classic diesel carriages. In September the Treno Natura will give you a chance to discover Asciano and its market of the Crete Senesi (12 and 19 September). Alternatively, dive into the Sagra della Val d’Arbia in Buonconvento. There will also be great events to bring the year to an end in October when the grape harvest is celebrated, as well as in November and December when truffles and oil are the stars of the show. The “nature train” is a sort of time machine, letting us experience the distant past, that of our forefathers, on a means of transport and speed that we’re not used to. Combining this uniqueness with the beauty of the areas we pass through, it’s inevitable that it’s a happy marriage.(Portions of this article first appeared in "Toscana & Chianti News")
