Pienza, the birthplace of Pope Pius II and Renaissance gem, wedged in the wonderful backdrop of the artistic, cultural and natural park of the Val d’Orcia, once again hosts a new edition of the flower festival, in a unique scenario of ancient music, aromas and colours. Pienza e i fiori, having reached its 25th year, will take place in the historic centre, along Corso Il Rossellino and in the town’s streets and squares from Saturday 1 to Sunday 9 May with nursery gardeners and florists from all over Italy. The event’s main protagonist will be the reconstruction of an early 16th-century Mannerist garden in Piazza Pio II, where flowering borders surrounded by evergreen hedges will be situated inside symmetrical squares. They will be included in perfect equilibrium in the beautiful Piazza Pio II, between the cathedral, Palazzo Piccolomini (Rossellino’s masterpiece) and the medieval Palazzo Borgia.
The town of Pienza will also offer visitors the unique opening of the courtyards of the historic buildings, as well as the exhibition of secular, skilled local handicrafts (works in wrought iron, sandstone statues and painted ceramics according to the 16th-century tradition). The project, done in tribute to the meaning that the floral motif had in the Renaissance, is fruit of the collaboration between the Pienza town council, Associazione Pro Loco, the natural commercial centre, nursery gardeners and gardening colleges in Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio.(Portions of this article first appeared in "Toscana & Chianti News")
