The Infiorata is one of the events that best distinguish the sunny season in every corner of Italy (especially in the centre and south). A blend of folklore and religion that all comes together in what is one of the most famous Infiorate in Tuscany: the one held in Scarperia. Every year on the last Sunday in May (this year on 30th May), the streets of the historic centre of the heart of the Mugello are filled with floral squares that represent a common theme, mostly created with shades of carnations and the colours of leaves. There are many stages of preparation for this event, ranging from planning to the practical execution. Initially put down on paper, the idea is reproduced with plaster on the streets. The petals are only removed from the flowers the evening before, ready to be carefully arranged on the design the next morning on the day of the event. Sport is the theme chosen for 2010. 
In the past the petals were usually always scattered along the routes of the religious processions. The tradition later became a real tribute to the festivities of the Corpus Domini.The first artistic Infiorate in history date back to the 17th century and Giovan Battista Ferrari reported it in his De Florum Cultura, in which he described the Vatican Infiorata on 29 June 1625 (in celebration of the saints Peter and Paul), with which some very important artists were involved. A pathway amongst folklore and religion, a happy occasion to regain the spirit and unity of a community and an excellent opportunity for tourists to be left amazed by these expanses of creative, aromatic and multicoloured decorations.(Portions of this article first appeared in "Toscana & Chianti News")
