A small Medieval village immersed in the Sienese countryside and perched on a hilltop, from where you can enjoy the striking view of the Metalliferi mountains, Sienese Montagnola, Alta Val di Cecina and Alta Valdelsa. This is Mensano, a popular fraction of the Municipality of Casole d’Elsa. Mensano still breathes the silence and rhythms of former times, walking around its narrow streets and admiring its typically medieval passageways, with the arches and remains of the town walls and fortifications. The most important building is the Romanesque San Giovanni Battista parish church, which dates back to the end of the twelfth century. Its facade is curiously not at right angles to the main axis of the building and its apse overlooks a sheer drop of approximately twenty metres, a natural fortification in defence of the small village. The small village centre was recently restructured and redeveloped while respecting its original aspect and restoring value and authenticity to the village.(Portions of this article first appeared in "Toscana & Chianti News")
