The band is one of the entities that best transmits a sense of celebration, shared identity and the vibrancy of traditions in every village. The Filarmonica Giuseppe Verdi di Impruneta, founded in 1842 as a “Banda” of the municipality of Galluzzo, is one of the oldest village band associations. Made of about 40 elements, it features all the typical instruments found in a band: saxophones, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, horns, trombones, flugelhorns and obviously percussion. The age of the musicians ranges from 12 to 80 years. A group made up of townsfolk through and through, new residents and those who have moved elsewhere who keep the bond with their birth town alive through the band. The repertory performed ranges from the classical to the modern, from light music to film soundtracks. Typical occasions to attend a performance may be of a religious nature, such as Christmas concerts or parades, or institutional, such as the commemorations or national festivals. A love for music and the aim of contributing towards spreading musical culture definitely bring the group to life, as well as joy and enthusiasm.
That’s why the Filarmonica also devotes so much energy to the music school of the same name, which this year has assisted in teaching traditional instruments such as guitar, electric bass, piano and singing to move towards the contemporary. Among the teachers, all of whom are graduates, and the members of the band there are also some maestros who after having taken their first steps in the Filarmonica di Impruneta ended up at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, bearing witness to the level and quality of the Filarmonica itself. This month the notes of the Impruneta band will provide the musical backdrop to the Festa di Primavera, a traditional local event that focuses on flowers and much more, with a concert scheduled to take place in Piazza Buondelmonti in the afternoon of Sunday 23.(Portions of this article first appeared in "Toscana & Chianti News")
