There are stories and legends about almost all of Tuscany’s castles, but the halo that floats above the Castello di Brolio is truly incredible. It is said that the last lord of this manor was a strange baron with somewhat difficult relations with the Church, so much so that he was excommunicated from the Arezzo administration, even though a mass was celebrated in his honour after his death. At the end of the nineteenth century, the residents of the area however began to live with a rather strange presence. Many peasants here swore that they saw a strange knight appear, completely dressed in black and in the saddle of a white horse, who had fun by playing jokes on whoever appeared before him. Many peasants were so scared that they went away and the few remaining attended a mass every Sunday in honour of the baron in fear of his vendetta.
From that time on, a series of very strange events started in the castle: light switches that came on by themselves, lines of plates that fell down, breaking on the ground, and even agonising screams. There were also those who went to bed and felt the sheets heavy like lead plates and then saw the gleaming eyes of the baron in the dark. In the 1960s, the castle became a destination of scholars and those who were curious about this odd phenomenon. The peasants of Brolio, as well as an expert medium, were able to create a true tulpa, a Tibetan term that indicates an objective ghost created by the concentration of thought above a well-defined image. It has now been a few years since the baron last appeared, but his legend continues to stir among the inhabitants of this area.(Portions of this article first appeared in "Toscana & Chianti News")
