Horseback riding, jeep trails, mountain bike racing or quad biking: visitors can expect to see all of these cross the Mediterranean maquis surrounding Castiglione della Pescaia’s Pian di Rocca during the much-anticipated Spring Festival. The three-day event, held from 30th April to 2nd May, supports a number of initiatives that are ideal for those wishing to immerse themselves in local traditions.
These include sports trials for the more adventurous, dog shows for animal lovers, performances by butteri(the famous Maremma cowherds) and large food stands promoting the best of local produce. This celebration is known as the “folk festival of yesteryear”.
Open for both lunch and dinner, food stalls will be offering visitors the chance to sample an array of specialities from the Grosseto area. The first warm days of Spring will be accompanied by some lively folk music, recreating the festive atmosphere of days gone by. In the olden days, these feasts – held in May – would involve peasant traditions such as the singing of begging and rhyming songs in the hope of a prosperous farming year ahead. The festival programme will be kicking off on Friday, 30th April, at 5:30 pm in Pian di Rocca’s central square with the solemn Eucharistic Celebration. The evenings of Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd May will be brought to life by free concerts and shows, guaranteed to keep visitors entertained until late.(Portions of this article first appeared in "Toscana & Chianti News")
