The colourful medieval costumes of the Palio di Querceta welcome you to the historic centre of Seravezza, medieval sword duels bring the streets to life to the sound of drums until you reach the Palazzo Mediceo where long tables offer a taste of the undisputed star of the show: the oil of Versilia. The traditional aromas drift through the olive trees of the Lucca area to mingle together at Enolia on Saturday and Sunday 17 and 18 April, the food and wine event that celebrates top-quality oil and local products for the 11th year running. The event, which attracts more than 10,000 visitors in two days, takes place in one of the most beautiful and loveliest buildings in Seravezza, the palace built on the initiative of Cosimo I de’Medici around 1560, thought to have been built by Bernardo Buontalenti. As happens every year, 2010 will also stage the preview of a local product. In previous years, the Scoppolato di Pedona, a cave-aged sheep’s milk cheese, and Penitente 1797, a chestnut-hung ham, were presented.
This year you’ll be able to try the extra-virgin olive oil pink lard for the first time, an original reworking of an old flavour. In addition to the Tuscan delicacies, there will be stalls dedicated to products from other regions and entertaining side shows: jazz and blues concerts, conferences, connoisseur courses and, last but not least, the Pedalando tra gli ulivi (Pedalling through the olive trees) ride, a bike ride stopping at sculpture workshops and gastronomic moments from Querceta to the Palazzo Mediceo.(Portions of this article first appeared in "Toscana & Chianti News")
